The Future of Crossfield

Crossfield Administration and Council are in the process of reaffirming the Town’s overall vision for growth and development over the long term. To help us do this, the Town is working on an update to the Municipal Development Plan (MDP).

What is a Municipal Development Plan?

Collectively, the MDP represents a long-range plan to help guide the Town of Crossfield Council and administration in making sustainable, responsible, and accountable decisions with respect to how land is used, growth and development, and the services provided to the community. The MDP is a blueprint for how the Town will grow and develop over time. It covers things like where new homes, businesses, parks, and roads will go, and how to make the community a better place to live.  In summary, the MDP should:

  • Encompass what citizens value most about their community (what they want to protect)
  • Captures an image of what the community wants the Twon to become in the future (what they want to attract); and
  • Provides the direction for the goals and policies within the plan, which support how decisions are made

Why is the Town of Crossfield updating the Municipal Development Plan?

The current Municipal Development Plan (MDP) was adopted in 2018 and requires updating to reflect the status of Crossfield since it was implemented 6 years ago. The update is important to explore changes in community perspectives, needs, and experiences, as well as changes in demographics, the economy, and land use.

This update will give Crossfield council and administration the opportunity to:

  • Take inventory of what has evolved and what remains relevant
  • Identify current and emerging issues and opportunities that require attention
  • Identify new goals and priorities

May 2025 Update: What Have We Been Working On?

After community engagement in 2024, the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) was shaped by the priorities and aspirations of Crossfield residents. Through an online survey and participation in the September 10, 2024 Community Fest, key themes & priorities emerged including recreation and public amenities, parks and green space, and maintaining the character of Crossfield. Following this engagement phase, the input collected was used to refine and add to the proposed updates, ensuring the updated MDP reflects the current community’s vision for the future of Crossfield. The summary of feedback from this first round of engagement can be reviewed here

Key updates have been made to several areas within the MDP, including:

  • Clarifying policy direction and priorities;
  • Land use changes to guide community placemaking; and,
  • Updating reserve policies to create functional public park spaces.

The proposed updates to the MDP were shared with residents through an in-person information session on March 26, 2025. At this event residents had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the next steps. A survey was also available to residents from March 14 to April 4. The input collected from the survey will be summarized in a What We Learned Report. (Coming soon.)

What is next? Participate in the Municipal Development Plan update!

With the information learned from the survey results, the project team will refine the MDP to ensure alignment with community priorities and feedback.

The updated MDP will then be considered by Council at a Public Hearing, tentatively scheduled for June 2025.

Members of the public can attend this meeting, voice support, concerns, or provide suggestions that may inform Council’s decision. The Town will post notice of the Public Hearing date 2 -weeks in advance, with instructions on how to participate.
